More than a century ago, Lancaster General Hospital was founded to provide care and improve the health status of everyone in the community. Our mission has never changed. Since it opened in 1893 in a small home on North Queen Street, Lancaster General has continued to meet the needs of the community by delivering the best possible care to its patients regardless of their ability to pay. Today, Lancaster General hospital has grown into a major regional institution still known for providing the community with high quality, low cost, caring medical services.

In over a century of service, LGH has earned a reputation for being one of the most effective and well-managed hospitals in America. The 590-bed JCAHO and Magnet-accredited hospital is recognized as a tertiary care facility -- one capable of providing highly technical and specialized care to the most severely injured and most seriously ill patients.

LGH is also a regional referral center with an exceptional depth of experience. It offers a wide range of specialties including cardiac, cancer treatment, vascular surgery, pulmonary and neurosurgery. Within these specialties, the hospital provides a comprehensive spectrum of patient care services that includes early detection, diagnostics, treatment, rehabilitation and clinical research.

As one of the busiest hospitals in Pennsylvania, LGH annually takes care of more than 35,000 inpatients and 85,000 emergency department patients. The non-profit hospital and health system performs more than 70,000 outpatient procedures a year.

Lancaster General's commitment to quality has earned us a regional and national reputation for clinical and operational excellence. Solucient, a national source for healthcare information, named LGH among America's 500 Top Hospitals seven times in the last 9 years.

Healthcare quality resource HealthGrades awarded LGH with the HealthGrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Patient Safety three years in a row. LGH was one of 238 facilities to receive the 2006 award, putting it in the top 5 percent of all hospitals nationwide for patient safety outcomes.

Also, the Pennsylvania Healthcare Cost Containment Council consistently shows LGH to be one of the top hospitals in the state in terms of low costs and low mortality rates.
