Mission Statement

The Rock 'n’ Roll Camp for Girls, a 501(c)3 non-profit, builds girls’ self-esteem through music creation and performance. Providing workshops and technical training, we create leadership opportunities, cultivate a supportive community of peers and mentors, develop life skills, and encourage social change.

Description

At Rock Camp, we want to eradicate all of the limiting myths about music and gender, which make girls afraid to speak up, sing out, and make noise! We seek to demonstrate through lessons, mentorship, positive examples, and the experiences of the staff and volunteers that every genre of music, technical job, and creative endeavor in the music industry is available to any girl or woman who wants to explore them.

The Rock 'n’ Roll Camp for Girls was founded in 2001 as a one-week summer day camp where girls come together, form bands, write an original song, and perform at a local music venue on Saturday evening. Since then, Summer Camp has grown to be three sessions every summer with over 200 girls involved each year.

In 2003, the organization launched year-round after-school programming to provide more opportunities for girls to get involved in music and creative empowerment. After school programs are one day a week for 10 weeks. They include Girls Rock Institute, the after-school version of our Summer Camp; Hip Hop Elements, which focuses on four core elements of hip hop; and Rock Camp Studio, a program aimed at teaching recording and audio engineering.

In 2004, we added Ladies Rock Camp to our programming--a three-day intensified version of Summer Camp for women 21+. All proceeds from LRC go into the Girls Rock Scholarship fund to provide financial aid for youth campers.

For over ten years, Rock Camp has provided girls with a wide variety of useful tools: from amplifiers, distortion pedals, and drum lessons to self-defense classes, zine workshops, and positive female mentors. We believe offering these helps girls develop--musically, mentally, and emotionally--and encourage them to form their own ideas of who and what they want to be.

The Rock 'n’ Roll Camp for Girls values diversity of age, race, economic status, gender expression, size, physical ability, developmental ability, musical interests, learning styles, nationality, religion, thought, citizenship status, and sexual orientation. We promote respect and do not tolerate racism, sexism, homophobia, or other discriminatory behaviors or expressions.

We believe:

Girls can play any kind of music they want,

creative voices of girls and women need to be amplified to create social change,

girls need positive role models and support for their creative endeavors,

...in creating a community where girls support each other rather than tear each other down

...in empowering girls to recognize, understand, and respond to discrimination,

"Girls Rock" is more than just a slogan.
