Description

MRWC is a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization formed in 1976 by citizens and regional planning commissions to promote citizen involvement in the clean up of the Merrimack River. We understand that we are the only third-party advocate of the Merrimack River in Massachusetts who is independent of commercial or regulatory interests; we are "The Voice of the Merrimack."

As "The Voice of the Merrimack," we are extremely concerned about the lack of definitive knowledge of the water quality in the Merrimack River, sources of pollution in the river and accountability of polluters. We believe that the Merrimack River Watershed has two significant sources of pollution impacting water quality, combined sewer overflows (CSO) and an increase in impervious cover resulting from the rapid population and housing growth. Our goal is to quantify the water quality of the Merrimack River, discover the sources of pollution to the river, hold polluters of the Merrimack River accountable to reducing, if not ceasing illicit discharges and educate watershed constituents on how to protect this important resource.
