Mission Statement

The Surplus Exchange is a nonprofit that diverts electronics and commercial furniture from landfills through reuse and responsible recycling. Our goal is to have items get reused (refurbished and either sold through our store or donated to community nonprofits) until their end of life and then properly, ethically recycled.

Description

The Surplus Exchange is committed to keeping electronics out of landfills and from ending up in developing countries. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit, meaning that most electronics that are donated to us become a tax write off for the individual or organization. Our E-Steward certification guarantees that none of the items recycled through us ever ends up in a landfill or going to underdeveloped countries. The E-Steward certification also has data security as a high priority, meaning that all functioning hard drives are wiped clean of all data to the NIST standard 800-88 Rev. 1. All non-functioning hard drives will be shredded. Surplus Exchange also has a reuse program that extends the life of machines that could have gone into landfills. Along with the electronics recycling, we also accept donations of lightly used office furniture that we resell in our warehouse at 518 Santa Fe Street.
