Mission Statement

Rediscovery offers a continuum of services to unaccompanied, homeless high school students and youth who are aging out of foster care, in order to ensure their successful transition to adulthood.

Description

Rediscovery was founded and incorporated as a non-profit in January 2001, with a focus on developing innovative wrap-around services to address the national crisis of ill-prepared youth transitioning into adult corrections and welfare systems. Beginning in February 2002, Rediscovery started its first group home program and continued to expand.

In July of 2011, Rediscovery entered into a strategic merger with the Justice Resource Institute (JRI), a larger human services agency in Massachusetts. The merger allows Rediscovery to keep its brand and identity as a cutting-edge, solutions-oriented service provider while allowing us to leverage the strength and infrastructure of an organization much deeper and broader than ourselves. Despite the merger, however, we must continue to raise all of the funding to sustain our privately funded initiatives.

Key Accomplishments:

  • 83% of youth have either received a high school diploma or GED or are on track to do so before leaving care, compared with 33% average among youth aging out of foster care.
  • 94% of youth have gained employment experience, compared with 31% average among foster care youth
  • Of the 34 participants in our YouthHarbors program over its first three years, 92% have been housed at the end of the year, and 97% have either graduated or been on track to graduate
  • Started the only formalized alumni program in Massachusetts to date

Each of Rediscovery’s programs offer a wide variety of individually-tailored workshops and mentoring sessions to provide further assistance to help clients reach various goals. These workshops are either provided by Rediscovery itself or Rediscovery refers its clients to local agencies offering them. The workshops may include: substance abuse counseling, career coaching, life skills lessons, academic tutoring, financial management, and domestic skills.
