Mission Statement

The New Mexico State Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission was established in 1991 by the Legislature of the State of New Mexico. It was introduced by Senator's Cisneros, Roman Maes, Mary Jane Garcia, Gloria Howes, and Shannon Robinson.

The mission for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission is to promote cultural awareness and human rights through Dr. King's life philosophy and six principles of nonviolent social action to all peoples of New Mexico. "Nonviolence is not just about a person, one family, or one community, it is a holistic philosophy. All life is interrelated; we are all tied together," said Coretta Scott King.

Our Mission

The mission of Martin Luther King, Jr. program is to promote Martin Luther King, Jr.’s principles and philosophy to the people of New Mexico to improve interracial cooperation and reduce youth conflicts in our communities.

Our Vision

The Martin Luther King, Jr. State Commission’s vision is as follows:

  1. To conduct MLK Annual Youth Conference and Youth Leadership Conference;
  2. To substantially reduce violent activity by juveniles in New Mexico;
  3. To expand MLK educational resource library. In addition, the MLK Jr. State Commission wants to help schools on statistical levels to reach a goal of being free of violence by hosting the Youth Against Violence Symposium.
  4. Lastly, the MLK Jr. State Commission also envisions a stronger network with community organizations by the following:

Collaboration

To assist organizations and groups who are committed to providing community programs that promote Dr. King’s principles and philosophy; to exchange ideas and information with these organizations in order to enhance their community program’s outcome measurements.

Coordinating

To develop a harmonizing relationship with heir local MLK affiliates whose mission statement is parallel with the Martin Luther King, Jr. State Commission.

Cooperating

To invest resources strategically to organizations that strive to vastly improve their MLK community activities and programs.
