The Sankofa Center is a U.S. based 501(c)3 non profit charitable organization that partners with its sister charity in Ghana on volunteer programs throughout the year. Together we organize vibrant volunteer programs of Americans with backgrounds ranging from the arts to public health who visit Africa. Our mission is to collaborate with African artists & health workers to use African dance and drama in combination with HIV education, prevention, testing, and link to treatment efforts to combat the impact of HIV/AIDS for thousands of women, men, and youths in Africa, and here in the U.S.
The Sankofa Center is a 501(c)(3) International arts-based HIV/AIDS charity based in California. Founded by a University of California educated scholar in 2004, the charity uses culturally appropriate ways- the arts merged with health information- to educated rural villagers about HIV/AIDS on tours throughout West Africa. They also conduct classroom educational seminars, provide free on-the spot rapid testing, and link thousands of women, men, and youths to support services in Africa.
Sankofa Center maintains a vibrant fair-trade retail product line made by their HIV/AIDS Cooperative in Africa supporting the fight against HIV/AIDS sold in upscale boutiques, museums, and to world savvy retail consumers. Products range from table top, exquisite bedding, home and decor, eco, to unique fashion lines. Fundraising from the line is done by a sophisticated International team of interns and volunteers called Ambassadors. The team not only promotes one-of-a kind exclusive style raising funds to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa; but, they are essential in the public's enlightenment and constant dialogue on HIV/AIDS issues here at home.
