Mission Statement

Pets for Vets provides a second chance for both our returning veterans and needy shelter dogs. These animals can make excellent companions but do not have that chance and our brave soldiers receive a second chance at health and happiness. The bonds of friendship formed between man and animal have the power to ease the suffering of our troops when they return from overseas.

Description

Our program is an individualized one. A Pets For Vets volunteer dog trainer meets with the veteran for an extensive interview and home visit to determine the veteran's lifestyle, personality and needs. The trainer then begins searching shelters for the perfect match for that specific veteran. Part of this process is a behavioral assessment. Once our trainer finds the perfect match, she will then pull/adopt the dog from the shelter and foster the dog while training to Canine Good Citizen standards. Once the dog is trained Pets for Vets places the dog, and all initial necessities, all at no charge to veteran. The trainer will also provide ongoing training support should the veteran need it. Any veteran who could benefit from having a trained companion pet and is able to care for one is eligible. Pets For Vets does not have a facility to house dogs. At this time we have a waiting list of veterans eager to receive their perfect shelter dog.
