Description

Would people affected by cancer in your city benefit from a 'Skills for Healing’ seminar or weekend retreat facilitated by an Oncologist and a Mindfulness Teacher?

The Healing and Cancer Foundation (HCF) is looking for retreat/seminar organizers living in Canada who would be willing to partner with HCF to bring a retreat and/or public talk to their city. This is a one-time, part-time volunteer position.

I am an Oncologist and Associate Professor of Medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax. Dr. Timothy Walker is a Psychotherapist and Teacher. Together we have facilitated The 'Skills for Healing’ Cancer Weekend Retreats since 1999 in over 20 cities in Canada and abroad. The retreats teach an integrated approach to the cancer diagnosis including how to get the best care from the medical system, ways to empower and nurture the body, scientific and wisdom-based healing techniques like mindfulness and reframing difficult thoughts and emotions, all within a supportive/expressive support group atmosphere. Visit www.HealingandCancer.org/video to view documentaries of the retreats.

In 2009, we obtained official registered Canadian charity status, with the aspiration to share the teachings from the weekend retreats with a much wider audience. We have delivered hundreds of talks and seminars to diverse audiences free of charge, and have produced documentaries, webcasts and educational sets which have been viewed on our website by thousands of people. Our activities are made possible by partnerships and organizations providing grants for specific projects (like weekend retreats).

Our mandate is to deliver programs in six Canadian cities each year. A typical weekend would include a Thursday night public talk and a Friday day-long seminar (for health care professionals). A weekend retreat for up to 55 people affected by cancer would take place from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon. Having a local organizer in each city is essential to offering a combination of the above programs. Together, we could work with the support and guidance of the Director of Operations to bring these much needed programs to your city.
