Mission Statement

The mission of the Flickinger Learning Center is to provide educational opportunities for learners of all ages, races, beliefs, and abilities for stronger individuals and a healthier community.

Description

The Flickinger Learning Center opened in the fall of 2003 for the purpose of providing a safe place for after school activities. We also partnered with Muscatine Community College in the area of GED tutoring.

Another classroom was added in 2005 and further remodeling in subsequent years has produced a multipurpose room with small kitchen, a state of the art computer lab and a complete renovation of the lower level. Dedicated funding from Roy J Carver Trust, Muscatine Connected, Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine, United Way, HNI Corporation and Muscatine Charities has also enabled the hiring of a director, a few part-time teachers and IT experts.

Hands-on labor through the participation of Leadership Muscatine enabled improvements in heating, air conditioning, new lighting, and a city code approved sprinkler system to enable use of the lower level.

Our mission continues to be the provision of educational help for those who need a boost, on the elementary school level as well as English/Spanish speaking, reading and computer skills for adults.

The results of these improvements has been explosive participation in the after school program and dramatic improvement in test scores verified with school personnel. Supper is even served each evening before going home, graciously provided by Pearl City Outreach and others.

We rely heavily on a small army of volunteers to help keep things functioning smoothly.
