Mission Statement

Columbus Dance Theatre (CDT) is a dance institution committed to enriching the cultural life of our community through its resident professional company, its educational programming, and its role as an umbrella organization for the dance community.

Description

Columbus Dance Theatre (CDT) is a unique voice for dance in Columbus with work born out of a rich background in ballet, modern dance, music, and theatre. As a professional arts organization, CDT produces high-quality work in an intimate environment. CDT performs alongside the major arts organizations of the city, including the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Opera Columbus, BalletMet, and many others, but it retains an intimate and personal quality.

CDT is a nationally recognized arts organization with a significant history of community involvement through its professional company, school, and its role as a leading sponsor of independent artists in central Ohio.

The Company repertoire is a highly theatrical fusion of ballet and contemporary movement creating works that range from contemporary abstraction to classical narrative.

The work of the Company is theatrical, new, fresh, and innovative, offering central Ohio audiences a cutting edge performance experience.

Featuring the work of its Artistic Director Tim Veach and selected guest choreographers, the Company repertoire showcases a wide array of styles and programming ranging from cutting edge contemporary dance to family programming. One unique feature of CDT and its repertoire is its reliance on classical and neo-classical music and its affiliation with recognized chamber music ensembles to provide live music for its performances.

CDT employs 14 professional dancers who will perform five different concerts during the 2013-14 year. Performances take place in the Fisher Theatre, CDT’s home performance space on East Main Street; the Lincoln Theatre; and the Fritsche Theatre with its annual performance of Matchgirl. In addition to local performances, the company has appeared at festivals and performances throughout the United States.

The School of Columbus Dance Theatre is a professional training school affiliated with CDT’s nationally recognized professional Company. The school accepts students at the age of 3 and annually trains more than 100 aspiring dancers for careers in dance in a supportive, student-centered environment. The programs include classes for young children (ages 3--9), an Intensive Training Program for students from ages 10 to 18, and a Summer Intensive Program for dancers over 8 years of age. Students from the school are included in selected CDT performances as determined by the artistic director.
