Virginia City is a living town of 150 year round residents who host the West's best preserved gold mining town from the 1860s. Visitors walk the same boardwalks that desperate Vigilantes once patrolled. Guests are transported to a time when rowdy miners mingled in saloons and restaurants with women of negotiable affection.
View over 100 historic buildings complete with artifacts and furnishings. Ride the 1910 fully refurbished steam locomotive, the stagecoach, attend a live theater show, stay the night in homey historic lodging. Shop in unique gift and specialty shops. Nevada City
Alder Gulch was the scene of Montana's greatest placer gold rush, discovered by the Fairweather party in May of 1863. Nevada City's Music Hall is home to the largest public collection of automated music machines in North America. At its peak, Nevada City boasted dozens of stores and cabins that extended back about six blocks. Nevada City is a recreated town with 14 original structures remaining on site from the 1863 period. There are a total of 100 historic buildings from throughout the State located in this charming old west town. Nevada City has been used as a set by many producers over the years, so if it looks familiar to you have probably seen the town on many of the old western movies. Today Nevada City is interpreted every weekend by costumed interpreters representing the early days of the transition from Idaho Territory to Montana Territory, 1863 -1865. Many of our volunteers work as Living Historians, researching, portraying and educating the public. Volunteers work with youth groups, Educational Outreach, Maintenance, Grounds Keeping, Preservation, Collections, Hands-On History Camp and much more.
