Mission Statement

Hope Community is a non-profit community-controlled development corporation dedicated to the revitalization of East Harlem since 1968. It has redeveloped 70 buildings and has 1100 apartments under management, and offers an array of community-building programs.

Description

Hope offers a comprehensive package of housing services to low, moderate- and middle-income families through three core programs:

Housing Development creates permanent new housing and retail spaces through the gut-rehabilitation of tenement buildings, cooperative conversion and new construction. In the past 10 years Hope has developed nearly 700 units of housing to provide quality affordable, permanent housing in our community and transitional housing for formerly homeless families, and created new jobs by renting 40 retail spaces to local entrepreneurs

Property Management division manages 1,300 affordable apartments in 72 buildings scattered throughout the community. Hope pioneered a zone team model management strategy to provide building maintenance and other services to clusters of apartment buildings. Recently the department implemented property management software tot link accounting, property management and maintenance service for all properties and tenants.

Community Relations seeks to provide an enriched and healthy environment for the residents of East Harlem that reaches beyond physical housing. In the past 10 years, the department has: transformed 17 vacant lots into vest pocket parks and community gardens, sponsored an extensive calendar of public events, developed an extensive a social services referral system, and facilitated tenant associations to build local leadership.
