Mission Statement

The Santa Fe Alliance for Science inspires the inner scientist in Santa Fe students by creating STEM learning opportunities through its network of volunteer scientists and STEM professionals.

Description

We involve local scientists, engineers and STEM professionals in the educational process by arranging for them to have direct contact with students and teachers. There are many opportunities to do this: visiting classrooms to engage students in hands-on science experiments and STEM-related activities; helping with inquiry-based learning, labs, mentorships and science projects; coaching students as they develop their school science fair projects and judging student science fair projects; helping with professional development for teachers; and helping with communication, marketing and other opportunities to help the organization increase its presence in the community. The possible time involvements cover a wide range and afford a great deal of flexibility. Volunteers might also include science teachers or laypeople with good knowledge of the intended subject areas.

We match volunteers who have registered (on the SFAFS website) with students, teachers and schools who have expressed interest in a given area of science or technology. This is done in a way that is protective of all personal information. All volunteers are screened. The level of screening depends on the possible level of contact between the volunteer and the student or teacher. We wish to insure that the inquiries are serious and the interactions are responsible.
