Here's a sample of our volunteer opportunities:VIEW AS
While the Alliance for Science has a number of goals, its founding motivation is to help improve K-12 science education in northern New Mexico. We want to involve local scientists, engineers and technicians in the educational process by arranging for them to have direct contact with students and teachers. There are many opportunities to do this: advising students on career or college choices; making guest appearances in classrooms to discuss interesting science; helping with inquiry-based learning, labs, mentorships and science projects; teaching in the classroom; helping with professional development for teachers. The possible time involvements cover a wide range and afford a great deal of flexibility. Volunteers might also include science teachers or laypeople with good knowledge of the intended subject areas.
The Alliance tries to match volunteers who have registered (on the SFAFS website) with students, teachers and schools who have expressed interest in a given area of science or technology. This is done in a way that is protective of all personal information. All volunteers are screened. The level of screening depends on the possible level of contact between the volunteer and the student or teacher. We wish to insure that the enquiries are serious and the interactions are responsible.
