"Death is not the ultimate tragedy of life. The ultimate tragedy is depersonalization-dying in an alien and sterile area...separated from the spiritual nourishment that comes from being able to reach out to a loving hand...separated from the desire to experience the things that made life worth living...separated from hope." Norman Cousins Heartland Hospice's goal is that no patient should die alone. We need volunteers to help us transition our patients from life to death by creating a peaceful setting through prayer, music, poetry, candles, and most importantly presence. For more information please email or call the Volunteer Department at 1-800-497-0575.

Heartland Hospice's program utilizes a team approach to meet the physical, social and spiritual needs of our patients and their families. This team includes the medical director, attending physician, nurses, certified nursing assistants, social workers, spiritual counselors, bereavement counselors and volunteers. Volunteers are the heart of the hospice team. We depend on our hospice volunteers to help us provide the extra love and care our patients and their families need at this time in their life. Volunteers offer support, companionship and practical, compassionate help to this special group of people. Whether it is running errands, staying with the patient so family members can take a break, reading to a patient or holding their hand, the help and support our volunteers give is returned to them in countless ways. As a Heartland Hospice volunteer, you can donate as much or as little of your time as you desire. The duties of our volunteers are varied. This flexibility allows you to find an area or service that is uniquely suited to you as well as provide you with the greatest personal satisfaction. As a volunteer, you will love the sense of self-satisfaction you will receive from enriching someone's life. And you will enjoy learning from the vast experience and colorful life of our patients and their families. Our volunteers tell us that whenever they volunteer with hospice, they learn new skills and expand their knowledge and experience. We invite you to join our team as a hospice volunteer. If you are a member of a special interest group (a choir, drama club, garden club, etc.) you may want to volunteer your group for a special project or activity. Become an integral part of the Heartland family by becoming a hospice volunteer. To find our more about Heartland's Volunteer Program and upcoming trainings please contact us @ 724-744-1408.
