Here's a sample of our volunteer opportunities:VIEW AS
Our Mission is to assist adults in Louisa County by providing quality tutoring in basic literacy, GED preparation and English language instruction in a safe and confidential environment without consideration of race, gender, religion, or national origin.
Adult Community Education (ACE), a community based literacy organization, was founded in 1987 as Literacy Volunteers of Louisa, with the mission of 'assisting adults in Louisa County in attaining their educational goals in a safe and confidential environment, without consideration of race, gender, religion, or national origin.’ We do not charge for our services. We are a member of ProLiteracy International and are a 501c3 non profit organization. We recruit and train volunteer tutors to work with students one-on-one, and for 20 years were an all-volunteer organization. Over the past five years, with a half-time executive director, we have expanded from 5 to over 60 students and become well known and respected in the community. We have a dedicated professional volunteer staff and an active Board of Directors. Our learning center includes a small computer lab providing computer access for GED practice, interactive reading practice, and Rosetta Stone for ESOL.
Our roots as a traditional literacy organization offering tutoring to adults struggling with basic reading have provided a firm footing from which to grow to meet the changing educational needs of today's adults and the changing demographics of our county. Although one-on-one tutoring by trained volunteer tutors and small classes in English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) are still our core programs, we are developing program enhancements based on students' needs for more flexible hours, access to computer technology, child care options, and ability to participate in their children's education.
