Mission Statement
The Mission of the St. George Village Botanical Garden shall be to promote knowledge of, respect for and the responsible use of plants, especially the plants of St. Croix, and the eastern Caribbean. It will achieve this by means of education, conservation, horticulture, historical and research programs and by creating an exciting, enlightening and aesthetic experience for Garden visitors of all ages.
Description
The St. George Village Botanical Garden is a 16 acre ethnobotanical display garden that overlaps the remains of a Danish-colonial sugar cane plantation and an Amerindian settlement. The plantings features many of the plants that are native to the US Virgin Islands and the eastern Caribbean as well as plants suited to local conditions. Educational activities throughout the year highlight the traditional and contemporary uses of plants as medicine, food, clothing, building material, and material of arts and crafts. The structures and ruins of a 19th century sugar plantation serve as a backdrop for the tropical landscape, and the the Garden also maintains a historical and botanical library and hebarium.
