Our mission is to provide people with disabilities the assistance and support necessary to enable them to live valued lives in the community.
As the country's largest, private, not-for-profit provider of services to the developmentally disabled, we are nationally recognized for our innovative and highly successful approaches to assist people with disabilities achieve higher levels of independence and self-determination. Over our 40-year history, we have expanded the number of clientele we are able to serve from 50 persons to nearly 3,000, while establishing an unblemished reputation for high caliber, cost effective services.
Our goal is not just to shelter, but to transform lives and fully develop the innate potential of each and every one of our clients. Moreover, we create a model of excellence in caring for the disabled which raises the standard industry-wide. In 1986, we became the first agency in Florida to win accreditation by the Accreditation Council. Sunrise has also been awarded the prestigious national Residential Services Award from the American Network of Community Options and Resources (ANCOR), and was named the Organization of the Year by Parent to Parent of Miami in 1998. We have also been awarded the Richard B. Dillard Award for exceptional leadership in the field of developmental disabilities. Moving forward, we will continue to be industry leaders in the creation of effective and compassionate models of care for the disabled.
Sunrise Community, Inc. fulfills its mission to serve the developmentally disabled through the provision of comprehensive, community based housing, day training and education programs, and the creation of supported employment opportunities. The majority of our residential clients live in six-person homes, resulting in an empowering model of care which allows individuals to reach their full potential. Personalized support and community living in small homes fosters growth, socialization, and personal happiness. Our approach creates a sense of inclusion and self-direction often absent in the life of a developmentally disabled person lacking close family relationships.
Our Adult Day Training (ADT) facilities provide essential services to a broad array of clients, including disabled students from the Miami-Dade School district. Services include recreational therapy, education programs, living skills training and supported employment. In addition, these programs provide immeasurable assistance to families struggling to find the time and resources necessary to meet the special needs of a developmentally disabled family member. Our services allow a family to continue to care for a developmentally disabled relative in their own home, and help to maintain familial strength and cohesion in often trying circumstances.
The success of all of our activities is made possible by the dedication of the Sunrise Team. Many of our executive and support staff have over twenty years tenure with Sunrise. This dedication extends to our board members, many of whom have sons, daughters and other family members who are Sunrise clients. Finally, we are preparing our next generation of leaders through Sunrise University, which provides support staff comprehensive training and financial incentives to ensure long-term motivation and success.
