In re: National Citizenship Day Volunteers

Immigration reform is an important social topic that currently dominates our state-wide and national political dialogue. However, the current discussions usually fail to recognize those people who are legal U.S. residents and who wish to secure the privilege of full citizenship. We have found that such people are almost always pillars in their local communities whether as parents, business owners, or trusted social leaders.

On Saturday, October 21, 2006, we will sponsor National Citizenship Day 2006: Sacramento, a regional citizenship event built on the National Citizenship Day model. This event has met with great success across the nation, including Washington DC, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. We anticipate that several thousand people will appear at this event to hear speakers and seek help with finishing their citizenship applications. National Citizenship Day workshops in San Francisco and Los Angeles have drawn over 10,000 people, as well as national celebrities and news media attention.

We need your help and support. Events of this magnitude require the help of many volunteers. We would like your organization to help us by encouraging your members to join us in volunteering at the Sacramento National Citizenship Day Workshop on October 21 st, 2006. There are literally dozens of different roles to fit the preferences and interests of a volunteer and we welcome all levels of commitment. Particular roles that we need filled include translating for every language, filing and running, gathering intake information, setting up and tearing down, and staffing the media and VIP check in tables.

There are many reasons to volunteer at National Citizenship Day. In addition to assisting members of their community accomplish one of the most important goals of their lives, volunteers will get a behind the scenes view of the practical aspects of the immigration and naturalization process. Volunteers with legal training or interest can act as assistants to immigration attorneys, and all volunteers will be treated to spoken addresses by distinguished speakers and VIPs including California State Senator Deborah Ortiz.

Thank you for your time. With the support of our community partners and many volunteers we anticipate that National Citizenship Day 2006: Sacramento will be a success for everyone.

Warmest regards,

Victoria Contreras
