First Night Alexandria is dedicated to bringing Alexandria the largest family-focused and alcohol-free New Year's Eve event in the region. New Years is celebrated throughout the community with performing arts in local venues! Shops, retail stores, hotels, museums and historic buildings in Old Town Alexandria turn into performance venues showcasing area talent. Since 1994, First Night Alexandria has collaborated with area businesses, volunteers, sponsors and supporters to adapt to changing needs, begin new traditions and deliver a community-wide New Year's Eve celebration to remember!
First Night Alexandria is a celebration of the new year through the performing arts. More than 100 performances take place on 23 indoor stages throughout Old Town Alexandria, all evening! Entertainers include blue grass musicians, swing and honky-tonk bands, clowns, magicians, storytellers and classical musicians.
It's fun, affordable, safe and venues are alcohol-free.
Volunteers sign up in pairs for one or two shifts at performance venues or activity sites to assist attendees and performers, & to sell badges - its a great way to enjoy some performances and see the fireworks! Attendees purchase badges for a small fee (children 12 and under & active military are free), giving access to all entertainment venues. Everything is within walking distance and there is a free parking shuttle and King Street trolley available for use.
The grand finale rings in the new year at midnight with a spectacular fireworks display on the Potomac River at the foot of King Street.
