Mission Statement

Cliff Climbers: Mentoring For Excellence program will assist Washoe County youth who are struggling with any number of difficulties resulting from their impoverished situation or other factors which caused them to become at risk or homeless. Assistance is provided through helpful mentoring relationships.

Description

This program is a partnership of the national service program, AmeriCorps Vista and Washoe County Department of Social Services. Mentors committ for one year of service, volunteering 1 hour a week with their mentee. Before mentoring term starts, the mentor will be certified by the county through attendance of a 20 hour training, taught by a licensed and credentialed Marriage Family Child therapist. The training is focused on how to care for youth who have experienced different types of trauma. Community partners such as schools, non-profits and the Washoe County Social Services Department will refer youth interested in being mentored to the CCMFE program coordinator. The mentoring program will also provide a variety of resources and services to the youth in the areas of vocational rehabilitation/vocational counseling. Youth mentees are aged 12-22 and receive training throughout the year on topics that include: emotional intelligence, problem solving, goal setting and good relationship choices.

I voluntarily coordinate this program and also mentor within Cliff Climbers. I recommend mentoring youth who have experienced trauma because they very much want to find an adult they can believe it and receive support from. This is a worthwhile endeavor and use of your time! It is a rewarding challenge. Thank you.
