To develop awareness of and interest in health careers for youth from ethnic and racial backgrounds underrepresented in the health careers.
Northwestern CT AHEC, home of the Youth Health Service Corps, is one of four regional centers of the Connecticut AHEC Program and is located in Middlebury CT. Our mission is to inspire and enable disadvantaged youth to pursue rewarding careers as a health care professional. The Connecticut AHEC Program was established in 1995 by the Connecticut General Assembly, and received its initial federal funding from Human Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) in 1997. NWCTAHEC, established in 1998, is a 501-C-3 non-profit agency.
The Youth Health Service Corps is an Area Health Education Center program that teaches diverse high school students about careers in health care. The students are trained in topics ranging from medical ethics to disease prevention. They receive CPR/AED certification, and instruction in blood pressure, pulse, and respiration. The Corps students use their knowledge to make a valuable volunteer contribution in health care settings. In addition, they can participate in special projects such as oral health, nutrition and emergency preparedness
