Mission Statement

The Senior Nutrition Program provides nutritional lunchtime meals to senior citizens throughout the Louisville Metro area. Congregate Nutrition Sites offer an opportunity for seniors to come to a neighborhood location for a nutritious lunch, socialization and activities. Most sites are open from 9am to 1pm, Monday through Friday.

Description

Home delivered meals (Meals on Wheels) are delivered to the homebound elderly from the various nutrition sites. Meals are provided to anyone age sixty or older who is homebound due to illness. A social worker conducts an in-home visit to make this assessment. A waiting list is maintained to accommodate the ever growing need in this community. Those in the greatest physical, social and economic need are given priority as a vacancy becomes available.

Volunteers provide a needed service in delivering meals to the homebound elderly. Louisville Metro delivers over 300 meals daily on approximately 24 routes. Although the volunteer’s primary role is to deliver a nutritional meal to the homebound senior citizen, face-to-face contact is a very important aspect of this responsibility. Often the volunteer delivering the mobile meals is the only social interaction for a homebound senior. The Nutrition office depends on the volunteers to report any changes or information concerning the Meals on Wheels client.
