Mission Statement

The National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) is the only private, nonprofit membership organization dedicated exclusively "to protect and enhance America's National Park System for present and future generations."

Description

Established in 1919 by Stephen Tyng Mather, the first director of the National Park Service (NPS), NPCA was founded to give the American public an active role and voice in protecting our national treasures. NPCA and its 300,000 members nationwide, more than 41,000 of which reside in California, work with the Park Service and numerous national, regional, and local groups to protect the national parks and the natural and cultural resources that they preserve.

NPCA believes that our parks should be managed to ensure their long-term preservation. They should be well funded, broadly and enthusiastically visited, respectfully experienced, and cherished as the national treasures they are to all of us. To achieve our mission, NPCA conducts research, designs solutions, mobilizes diverse constituencies, and advocates for the parks. NPCA's advocacy outreach addresses local, regional, and national issues, legislation, and public policy that affect the national parks.
