The mission of the ACLU is to preserve all of these protections, which is guaranteed to us by the Constitution's Bill of Rights:
Your First Amendment rights - freedom of speech, association and assemby. Freedom of the press, and freedom of religion supported by the strict seperation of church and state.
Your right to equal protection under the law - equal treatment regardless of race, sex, religion or national origin.
Your right to due process - fair treatment by the government whenever the loss of your liberty or property is at stake.
Your right to privacy - freedom from unwarranted government intrusion into your personal and private affairs.
The ACLU of Northern California, based in San Francisco, is the affiliate that works to protect civil liberties in this region of the country. The ACLU-NC was founded in 1934 and today we are at the forefront of every civil liberties battle in the state--from the rights of immigrants and reproductive rights to abolition of the death penalty and the rights of lesbians and gay men.
The ACLU uses a dynamic mixture of strategies to accomplish our goal of ensuring constitutional rights and freedoms.
In addition to the direct litigation for which the ACLU has been known over the past seven decades, we engage in public education, inform the media, educate and lobby legislators, organize grassroots activists to enliven the public debate and disseminate information through our membership and volunteer chapters.
