Mission Statement
The mission of the Shun the Sun Foundation is to teach the value of life through sun protection education. Our goal is to provide Arizona residents with the resources needed to fight skin cancer. This will be accomplished by instructing children and families on the devastating effects of skin cancer caused by prolonged sun and UV ray exposure. We will continue to build shade structures that will encourage a lifestyle that promotes sun safety in our communities. We are developing continued education for licensed skin professionals to assist in the early detection of skin cancer and to treat patients who have been affected.
Description
The Shun the Sun Foundation is a small non-profit in the valley. Our organization makes a significant impact on the community by raising funds for shade structure development at local schools and community parks. The shade structure development costs range from $10,000 - $25,000 depending on the area of need. Building one structure requires generous campaign contributions, creative fundraising efforts, and several volunteer hours. These structures greatly improve the quality of life for children in the valley by keeping them protected from the sun’s harmful UV rays. In the past five years the Shun the Sun Foundation has raised funds for the development of four shade structures and local schools and community playgrounds in Mesa, AZ. We are in the process of raising funds for the fifth shade structure development at Mesa’s inner city Washington Park with is also the home of Step Up Schools.
