Mission Statement

Gowanus Canal Conservancy advocates and cares for ecologically sustainable parks and public spaces in the Gowanus lowlands while empowering a community of stewards. We envision a Gowanus Canal and surrounding urban environment that is clean, resilient, diverse and alive.

Description

Gowanus Canal Conservancy is dedicated to facilitating the development of a resilient, vibrant, open space network centered on the Gowanus Canal through activating and empowering community stewardship of the Gowanus Watershed. Since 2006, we have served as the environmental steward for the neighborhood through leading grassroots volunteer projects; educating students on environmental issues; and working with agencies, elected officials, and the community to advocate for, build, and maintain innovative green infrastructure around the Gowanus Canal.

My friend and I had so much fun doing this! Our group leader was very outgoing and we had a good time getting to know each other while getting work done. The residents were a huge help too and pointed us in the direction of more trees and brought out some more for us to collect. The fact that so many people thanked us for our work was very rewarding. It was raining quite a bit that day, but I was totally fine with it! Thanks for the great experience. My friend, Chadia and I would love to work with you guys again in the future!
