Mission Statement

Founded in 1991, The Joseph Residence is a private, non-profit, transitional housing facility developed to meet the overwhelming need for more than emergency shelter in the Missoula community. The families come from unique backgrounds, varying from drug addictions, mental illness, and living on the streets and are all experiencing economic hardships. The mission of the Joseph Residence is to enable these families to build on their strengths, foster independence and promote self-sufficiency.

The Joseph Residence is operated through a collaborative partnership between the Poverello Center Inc. and Missoula Housing Authority (MHA) and is designed to house 16 homeless families in a supportive structure that facilitates their transition into permanent housing. MHA determines income eligibililty, maintains the waiting list, and acts as landlord. The Joseph Residence provides on site programming including intensive case management, supportive staffing while the community center is open, parenting classes, financial education, and life skills classes. In addition to parental support, The Joseph Residence provides an enrichment program for children in order to address the unique needs of children who have experienced homelessness.

Each family residing at The Joseph Residence at Maclay Commons has a private apartment situated in a community setting with private parking, playground, and a community center. In addition, each unit comes with a secure and locked storage area. Several of these units meet The American with Disabilities Act guidelines, allowing us to serve families with specific physical needs. Each 2-3 bedroom unit comes fully furnished including a washer and dryer, small appliances (coffee pot/microwave), linens and bedding, dishes, cookware, cleaning supplies, and start up personal hygiene products, truly allowing families a new beginning.
