Virtual Opportunity
Loaves, Fishes & Computers, Inc., (LFC) is currently seeking new members to serve on its Board of Directors -- new board members who share our vision that closing the digital divide is imperative in supporting disadvantaged and underserved families' and individuals' economic self-reliance. Through access to digital tools and skills, individuals can overcome financial hardships, obtain employment opportunities, improve education, and connect with information and resources that can lead to a successful and rewarding future. LFC is seeking a diverse pool of new board members with a varied experience that may support its growth and evolving strategic direction. LFC is a non-profit organization that exists to facilitate opportunities through technology. Since its founding in 2009, LFC has achieved significant growth from the "one-man shop" started by Christian Mendelsohn, its founder who still serves as LFC's executive director, to a very visible and successful area non-profit that has helped thousands of residents overcome economic hardships and the "digital divide" in our large and diverse county. Since 2009, Loaves, Fishes & Computers, Inc. has served the Monterey County community in 3 distinctly unique ways: 1) by providing more than 50,000 low-cost or free computers to qualified low-income residents who have never owned or had convenient access to technology and its many opportunities for advancement. These are computers that would have otherwise been discarded but which are refurbished to "as-new" condition by LFC's dedicated volunteers 2) by providing training of employable job skills through LFC's structured computer refurbishing programs to volunteers who give thousands of hours of their time every year to help LFC achieve its mission 3) by "rescuing" an estimated 33 tons of computers and other technology from landfills and e-waste facilities, giving computers a "new life" by making them usable in households where they are needed the most 4) by offering fundamental computer literacy instruction to parents, seniors, and self-employed individuals, providing them with the basic tools to navigate the various digital devices and platforms necessary for employment, business, social services, education, and connecting with loved ones. LFC's board member requirements include 18 years of age or older and a commitment to a 3-year term, and attending regularly scheduled monthly meetings. LFC primarily seeks members to represent the diverse communities of Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito Counties and encourages women and young adults from all backgrounds to consider joining our small and very dedicated board of directors, to help us continue to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors.
