Mission Statement

The mission of The DIC is care for children with physical or developmental disabilities, or neurological or behavioral special needs in a way that is positive, passionate, integrated and family-centered so that the children can maximize their potential within their families and the community. The DIC is a leading center of excellence providing comprehensive and multidisciplinary care for children with special healthcare needs.
Two founding principles continue to guide The DIC and the care provided: service to the pediatric disabled community regardless of the patients' ability to pay and concentration on treating not just the disability, but the whole child.

The Detroit Institute for Children offers a variety of programs that treat the whole child. These programs include Physician Clinics, Rehabilitation Services, Assistive Technology Services, Orthotics, and Behavioral and Clinical Services. This healthcare mix includes a comprehensive array of more than 25 multi-disciplinary outpatient services. The DIC serves not only the child, but the entire family.
The professional staff of the DIC includes physicians, therapists, nurses, social workers, psychologists, orthotists, and other technicians and specialists. All of them take great pride in providing the highest quality of care to their young patients. The emphasis of care is on the whole child, not just the disability, and on working with the child's family and caregivers to improve his or her potential for maximum functioning. All of the above services are offered at The DIC's facility, so families can coordinate their visit with all of the child's care providers.

Children with disabilities face many challenges. No matter what their challenge is, helping disabled children to realize their full potential is a slow process. Most patients require weekly trips to their specialist for many years. The Detroit Institute for Children offers families a "one-stop shop" approach to healthcare in which patients may visit each of their clinicians during one coordinated visit. Additionally, The DIC serves not only the children, but their entire family through a comprehensive array of more than 25 multi-disciplinary outpatient services.

The DIC is reimbursed, on average, only 48% of the actual cost for service for children covered by Medicaid sponsored insurance plans, all of which are today administered by managed care companies. These children account for our largest patient grouping. Compounding the situation, over 50% of the children we treat are either in foster care or live in households with an annual income considered to be below poverty level. Considering these demographics, the options for co-payments are limited and difficult to explore.

We are committed to serving our young patients, despite the financial challenges of individual families. It is only with the kindness of contributors that we are able to continue meeting the needs of this population most in need. Children with special health care needs in our community come to The DIC for the highest quality care available, and we never turn anyone away.

It is only through the kindness of contributors that we are able to continue meeting the needs of this vulnerable pediatric population
