Literacy Volunteers Charlottesville/Albemarle is seeking volunteer tutors to assist adults in learning how to read, write, or speak English. Many of our students are refugees and immigrants. Wondering if becoming a tutor is right for you? Come to an information session to learn more about our mission, our students, and what it takes to be a literacy volunteer. This one hour session is a virtual and held on Zoom. If you love meeting and interacting with new people, we'd love to have you at our front desk! Volunteers in this role greet all who walk into the office, answer the phone, and help direct students and tutors throughout the office. Volunteers may also need to assist students in accessing the computer and using language learning software. The best fit for this position is a volunteer who is personable, patient, and excited to work with English language learners. Staff will provide training after completing an interview with the Volunteer Coordinator. Responsibilities Assist students with computer programs (training provided) Answer the phone, take messages Schedule appointments as needed Answer questions and help direct people to resources or rooms within the office Requirements Must be 18 years of age or older Comfortable using PC computers Prior experience working with various language speakers is preferred but not required Reliable and communicative of any schedule changes at least 24 hours before scheduled shifts

Compassionate and enthusiastic volunteers are needed to tutor adults in the Greater Charlottesville area in English speaking, reading, writing, or basic education. Many also need support in preparing for the U.S. Citizenship Interview. Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle is seeking volunteer tutors. Many of our students are refugees and immigrants trying to better their lives in their new community. No teaching experience is required. Our tutor training and additional support helps prepare you! Most of our tutor/student pairs meet for two hours a week at a mutually convenient time. Both in-person and virtual options available. We do ask for a year-long commitment. As a tutor, you will receive a rewarding experience knowing you've helped someone achieve their goals and improve their lives. Training is 5.5 hours with a lunch break (lunch is provided). Wordplay, Charlottesville's Game Show for Trivia Lovers, needs scorekeepers! This event, held on Thursday, April 24, 7 pm at the Paramount Theater is Literacy Volunteers' of Charlottesville/Ablemarle's annual team trivia fundraiser. Each team has a designated scorekeeper. It is a fast-paced and exciting event for both players and volunteers. As a volunteer scorekeeper, you must attend a 2-hour training before the event to pre-play the trivia game and learn how to score this year's game. Dinner and a drink ticket are provided at the event to all volunteers. The two training options are: Monday, April 7 from 6-8 pm or Saturday, April 12 from 1-3 pm. A meal will be provided at the training. Any questions should be directed to Rebecca at RThomas@literacyforall.org. Wordplay is the annual fundraiser for Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle. LVCA is an independent, nonprofit organization that promotes adult literacy through equitable, inclusive, free, confidential, one-to-one English and Citizenship tutoring. Funds raised through Wordplay support adult learners as they achieve their educational goals.
