Mission Statement

The City of Richmond's impact volunteering program, Richmond ESC (Excellence Serving our Community), aspires to: 1) raise awareness and mobilize residents to volunteer to address our community's challenges; 2) empower residents to beautify and revitalize their surroundings; and 3) engage parents, guardians, and adult residents to support young adults and children's educational and overall health and wellness development.

Description

Since program implementation in February 2013, Richmond ESC has engaged nearly 600 volunteers in various Richmond-based service projects. Of the 600 volunteers, 350 volunteers are youth between the ages of five and 21. We have partnered with Community Alliance for Learning to recruit volunteers to become writer coaches at Richmond High School. This program provides coaching to 150 high school students in the areas of writing and critical thinking skills. To date, 91 volunteer coaches are supporting high school students and we aim to expand the program to Kennedy High School during school year 2014/2015. Additionally, our Love Your Block initiative will launch in November 2013. Love Your Block will engage residents to begin volunteer-led beautification projects throughout the Richmond community that lead to increased involvement and improved quality of life.
