Mission Statement

To develop and maintain a diverse living collection of plants to support teaching and worldwide research in plant biology, further the conservation of plant diversity, and promote public understanding and appreciation of plants and the natural environment.

Description

The University of California Botanical Garden is a living museum open to the public featuring one of the most diverse plant collections in the United States. Established in 1890, the Garden's 34 acres contain over 12,000 different kinds of plants from all over the world arranged by region.

The docent training opened my eyes to a whole new world. Every place I go is more interesting because of what I have learned about plants. I have made some wonderful friends and all this while volunteering. I definitely receive more than I give.

Love plants? Like people? Looking for an opportunity to donate some time and energy in a beautiful outdoor setting? The Garden offers opportunities to become a docent, garden greeter or plant propagator. Take some school kids on a scavenger hunt, get some dirt under your fingernails, enjoy the outdoors while you work!

If you like plants and people the Garden presents a stellar opportunity to meet new ones and work in one of the most beautiful settings in the world! There are opportunities to work in the dirt, or with books, or with like-minded people; in solitude, or in society. Learning opportunities abound. You meet and greet, or work directly with friendly, knowledgeable people, and you have an opportunity to learn new things every single day! What's not to like?
