Mission Statement

POWER is a multi-racial, multi-lingual membership organization of low-income workers and families fighting for economic, gender and racial justice in San Francisco. Through grassroots organizing, leadership development, and alliance building, POWER develops the capacity of low-income communities of color to intervene in the political processes that impact our lives and the well being of our communities.

Description

POWER was founded in 1997 to serve as a vehicle to bring together no- and low-wage workers to change the economic and social systems that produce poverty and oppression. POWER's organizing approach includes three core strategies: wages community campaigns, builds alliances with other organizations, and develops the leadership of our members. Currently, POWER is advancing two organizing projects that respond to key struggles in San Francisco: development and the rights of low-wage workers. The Bayview Hunters Point Campaign is organizing low-income families in San Francisco's last remaining African American community to take control of the development process targeting this neighborhood and secure living wage employment, adequate affordable housing, and the right to remain in their neighborhood. The Women Workers Campaign is organizing low-wage immigrant domestic workers to access standard workers' rights and protections, as well as adequate wages. As part of this campaign, POWER is equipping domestic workers with the skills needed to negotiate fair work contracts directly with their employer.
