Brandywine River Valley Hospice in West Grove, PA is currently in need of volunteers in the home! A hospice volunteer is someone who wishes to make a difference in the lives of the terminally ill by contributing directly or indirectly to the services provided by hospice care. Volunteers provide emotional support and practical assistance that enhances the comfort and quality of life for patients, their families and loved ones. As a volunteer, you’ll serve a wide range of patients with a variety of life-limiting illnesses that can include, heart failure, COPD, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease ALS, multiple sclerosis and may other terminal diseases. Some of the common services provided by volunteers include: Support services and companionship (reading with the patient, playing music, bedside presence) Caregiver respite Write letters; legacy work Support community events (health fairs, outreach) Sharing hobbies and special interests Assisting with errands such as grocery shopping Homemaking tasks (dishes/laundry) and light meal preparation Veteran patients paired with those who have served in the military We also welcome professional volunteers who hold a license (ex: therapy dogs, massage therapists, licensed nurses). Brandywine River Valley Hospice in West Grove, PA is currently in need of veteran volunteers to provide support in the home. The Veteran-to-Veteran Program aims to pair recruited veteran volunteers with veteran hospice patients. Pairing veteran hospice patients with veteran volunteers, who may share common military experiences, gives these volunteers the unique ability to relate and connect with their veteran patient. What is the Importance of Veteran Volunteers? Veterans are part of a distinct culture with their own language, codes of conduct, honor, respect for service, duty and commitment. When Veterans interact, their common language and experiences can form a strong relational bond. A New Opportunity to Serve: Veteran volunteers help provide both direct and indirect patient support. Examples include: -Sitting, reminiscing or reading with patients -Writing letters -Watching TV, sports or listening to music -Taking part in Veteran recognition ceremonies -Light house or yard work -Dog walking -Assistance in replacing lost military awards -Providing check-in calls What are the Benefits of Being a Veteran Volunteer? As a veteran volunteer, you would have the opportunity for enhancing the comfort and quality of life for a Veteran Hospice Patient. Your involvement in the hospice team can be a personally rewarding and emotionally meaningful experience. The work you may do will remind you of the comradery and sense of pride and duty that you felt as a service member. Brandywine River Valley Hospice is a proud partner of the "We Honor Veterans" program. Our Veteran-to-Veteran Volunteer Program provides volunteers with the training needed to support military service veterans and their familes with in-home hospice care.
