Mission Statement
The westerly Land Trust, a not-for-profit corporation, seeks to preserve and enhance the sense of place of Westerly, RI by working to conserve and enhance the community's resources. The Trust works to preserve open space, rehabilitate and renew older neighborhoods, and create educational and recreational opportunities. Programs and activities are designed to enhance Westerly's urban landscape as welll as its natural environment, wildlife habitats, native plants and animals, and water resources.
Description
The Westerly Land Trust is a not-for-profit conservation corporation. As of August 2006, it owns 1000 acres of land in Westerly, RI. Approximately 700 acres are along the pristine Pawcatuck River.
The organization expanded its mission to include "smart growth" urban re-development, in part, to reduce development pressures on outlying areas. This program, as of August 2006 owns six commercial properties.
The orghanization has been growing rapidly in its mission and achievements. The structure of the organization continues to evolve to meet its changing needs.
