Mission Statement

The mission of Family Life Education (FLE) is to build a healthy community, strengthen families and promote the well-being of children and youth through education, outreach and support services.

With a focus on coordination, accountability, capacity building, and a new collaborative business model building strategic partnerships, FLE works with key public, private, and community stakeholders to ensure that Hartford’s children, youth and families have quality opportunities to develop the competencies critical to academic success and self sufficiency.

Description

Since 1987 Family Life Education has worked with youth and families in Hartford to help them establish and achieve goals through intensive case management including home visiting; education and support groups with transportation, childcare and food; and community outreach.

All FLE programs fall under one of the following initiatives: Youth Development and Support- including Teen and Young Parent Support, Risk Prevention and Positive youth Development ; Family Support including the Parkville Family Center and Nurturing Families Network; Affiliations and Partner Programs including Adult Education with Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford, and many other program partnerships; Research and Special Projects including the development of a Children's Gym/Wellness Center. All programs support the development of children and empower youth and parents of all ages to take charge of their lives. We teach parents to be champions for their children and community, ensure that children are healthy and engaged in learning, and help families strengthen financial stability. We work with youth and families to establish and realize goals, provide opportunities for them to learn and practice healthy lifestyles and community involvement, and support the healthy growth and development of children. Community outreach and research includes civic education, prevention of teen pregnancy/sexually transmitted infections, violence and child obesity. We plan to build a Children’s Gym/Wellness Center to address obesity through nutrition, health education, and exercise. We coordinate programming with the City ofHartfordat an adjacent City park.

FLE began in 2009 to implement a new business model based on collaborative partnerships. This model is the best method to address multi-faceted community challenges and provide the highest quality comprehensive services. Through the model, we partner with other collaborative agencies to share resources, combine fund-raising, and fill the gaps in services experienced by this community.
