Mission Statement

The Torrance Art Museum is a program of the Cultural Services Division of the City of Torrance Community Services Department. The Cultural Services Division is responsible for City-sponsored arts and cultural initiatives held at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center and throughout the City. TAM's mission is "to invigorate, delight and fascinate Torrance residents and the South Bay community by exhibiting and interpreting works of visual arts." Through its emphasis on contemporary artistic expression in Southern California, TAM brings together visual artists and community members; fosters personal and civic well-being by inspiring understanding and appreciation of the visual arts; and promotes meaningful experiences in the arts to strengthen creative and critical thinking skills.

Description

TAM offers a variety of programs. Visitors are invited to enjoy music and tour the current exhibits at the Torrance Art Museum in a casual atmosphere during the Museum's bi-monthly unplugged music series, Starters. During each exhibition cycle, evening artist lectures or a round-table discussion with art critics and historians are offered. A highly successful collaboration between TAM and the Torrance Public Library, Stories in Art provides a hands-on artistic experience for children. The goal of Stories in Art is to inspire children and encourage them to spend more time reading and engaging in both the art making and art viewing process.
