Pacific Elementary School

Description

We are a 100% free lunch, 75% English Language Learner school. Our school is situated in a spot uniquely lacking in community resources. The school campus is the community focus and only gathering place. This gives us a unique opportunity to affect both our students and the community if we undertake a school garden and greening project. It also makes the need for a beautiful and engaging campus more urgent, as it is a safe zone in the neighborhood for kids and families.

The idea for a school garden and more green spaces was originally initiated by our student council two years ago. It began because they were concerned about our lack of trees and shade on the playground and campus.
We are now working to green and grow our school. We are establishing a school garden program that can be used for hands-on, standards-based science lessons and application.

After a year of hard work with borrowed tools, our students managed to install irrigation on a new garden site. Thanks to help from the district, who fenced the site, Science Alive, and Soilborn Farms, we are close to our goal of having a garden space where students can learn and grow.
