Mission Statement

Our mission is to seek better health and living conditions for ALL living beings in the Peruvian Amazon region. This includes appropriate care, respect, and protection from cruelty and neglect.

Description

Amazon CARES is rooted in the Peruvian Amazon community with a team of Peruvian veterinarians, shelter staff, and volunteers. By working with local municipalities and using existing resources, we address and solve evolving issues of animal health and welfare more efficiently. We have created a culture of adoption in the region, once thought to be an impossibility. Some of the areas we are involved in include:

1.Advocacy & Education: Amazon CARES advocates for public health education, anti-animal cruelty, and humane education throughout the Peru region. We have assisted in mobilizing efforts for events such as Q orld Animal Day, World Spay Day, and World Rabies Day. We also participate in a one-hour weekly TV show called "El Mundo Invisible" (The Invisible World) which discusses animal protection issues.

2. Animal Shelter, Vaccination, and Animal Birth Control Programs: Amazon CARES Amazon CARES operates the only no-kill dog shelter in Peru’s Amazon River Basin. Our shelter often houses up to forty dogs at a time, providing dogs with veterinary care, food, shelter, and much needed love and attention until they are placed in a permanent home. We house cats in a separate location in Iquitos. We regularly provide vaccination and Animal Birth Control (ABC) programs throughout the region for a nominal fee.

3. Veterinary trips: Amazon CARES conducts four veterinary trips to Peru in which volunteers help us d istribute human anti-parasitic medications, conduct humane education classes and provide veterinary services to remote neighborhoods and jungle villages.

4. Virtual Volunteer Network: We are building a global network of animal advocates and human rights advocates to help us spread the word about animal and public health issues in the Amazon region.
