Mission Statement

Texas HOPE Literacy (HOPE) is a unique, faith-based organization dedicated to empowering at-risk children, youth, and adults to become productive citizens in today's world.

Description

Our organization trains inmates to be peer educators in literacy and math. The inmates are teach in a simulated workplace where each one contributes to the environment and works together as a team. There are 3 HOPE models: Chapel Model, Community Model, After Hours Model. These can be customized to fit unit needs and space. Volunteers micromanage the inmates who do prescribed tasks. Peer educators learn to focus on their students, to teach them as equals in spite of educational differences. All inmates learn to accept each other like they are, where they are as opposed to tolerating each other. Surrounding the models is faith that provides the way for inmates to change on the inside. Many have never been nurtured as children. HOPE focuses on empowerment and faith walk. Holistic programs are provided to help inmates deal with other issues that affect them negatively. Two sites are available in the Dallas area: Dawson State Jail, 106 W. Commerce & Hutchins State Jail, 1500 E. Langdon Rd.
