Mission Statement

The mission of Oakland International High School is to provide quality alternative education for recently arrived immigrant students in English language acquisition and in preparation for college. Our diverse students become active participants in our community while learning in small groups through hands-on, interdisciplinary projects and collaboration.

Description

All our teachers are trained in the Internationals Approach to teach students to improve their speaking, writing, and reading skills in English. We believe that English language acquisition is best fostered in an academic environment in which students participate in 1) Heterogeneous groups 2) Project based curriculum 3) English development is integrated into all content areas. Working in small groups, students learn academic content, art, music and technology through exciting, rigorous, hands-on projects as they learn their new language.

This is an amazing school that serves young people who have come to the Bay Area from all over the world. Some are refugees, some are undocumented (including a number of "unaccompanied minors"--children who arrived here on their own), all are English-language learners. I volunteered for a year in the classroom of a dynamic, talented young English teacher and got a great education myself in the richness of the Bay Area's immigrant cultures.
