Open Studios was started in 1993 by a group of artists who set aside one weekend in the fall to invite the public into their spaces to tour their studios and view their art. Today, the JPOS is one of the oldest open studio programs in New England. It continues to expand and now introduces over 200 artists at 75 sites to new audiences every year.

Open Studios has become the single most important event of the year for Jamaica Plain artists, accounting for a majority of their sales for the entire year. The arts community is essential to the health and vitality of Jamaica Plain, and Open Studios is essential to the health - even existence - of the arts community.
