United Cerebral Palsy was founded by a group of concerned parents of children with cerebral palsy in 1954 and incorporated in Wisconsin in 1970. United Cerebral Palsy of Southeastern Wisconsin serves persons with disabilities and their families in the following ways:
• Respite Care Program is the largest provider of in-home respite services for families in southeastern Wisconsin who are caring for a loved one with a disability. UCP-SEW provided in-home respite and crisis respite services for more than 1,500 families in southeastern Wisconsin last year.
The Respite Care program also sponsors bi-monthly R & R Club (recreation & respite) social/educational events for children with disabilities and their siblings to provide a "break" for their parents.
• Independent Living (ILP) helps adults with disabilities to locate affordable housing in small, integrated community settings rather than institutional residences, arranges for transportation, finance and budgeting assistance, provides access to community social activities and makes personal attendant support available, when needed. UCP is supporting the independence of 65 individuals with disabilities living on their own in the community.
UCP’s Independent Living and Respite Programs also respond to the needs of elderly parents who have an adult child with a disability living at home by offering services and support to both the person with a disability and his/her elderly parent(s) ---- allowing everyone to remain safely in the family home.
• Employment Services helps people with disabilities to seek, secure and retain competitive employment in the community as an alternative to placement in a sheltered workshop and empowers these individuals to maximize their earning potential so they are less dependent on government benefits. Employment Services is currently supporting more than 200 adults with disabilities in their employment and partners with more than 100 businesses in southeastern Wisconsin to create job opportunities within their companies for persons with disabilities.
• The Charlie Kapp Resource Center seeks to broadens awareness and connects individuals to needed services. Last year it responded to and linked over 900 families to community resources.
