Mission Statement

An Ounce of Nutrition partners with schools to provide food and nutrition education to middle and high school students. Using a train-the-teacher model, we teach youth about the benefits of real foods and how their food choices affect their personal health and the world around them.

Description

Our high school "Food for Thought" curriculum teaches students about nutrition and the food system, including how food is grown, harvested, processed, distributed, marketed, consumed, and disposed.

Our middle school "You Are What You Eat" curriculum teaches students about nutrition basics, food culture, common dietary choices, ingredients and food labels, the power of fruits and vegetables, and much more.

We achieve our mission by:

- offering well-researched, scientifically-based curricula that aligns with Colorado state standards

- partnering with educators in family and consumer science, culinary, and environmental science programs

- providing comprehensive planning and teaching support, including managing of logistics for hands-on activities and PowerPoints for each lesson

- utilizing dynamic community partners for speakers and field trips, thereby giving students an in-depth and up-to-date understanding of what is happening with the food movement in Colorado and across the U.S.

Ultimately, we seek to create youth food advocates who share our vision of a sustainable and equitable food system that nourishes healthy futures for all youth.
