Mission Statement
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for citizens with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Description
The Special Olympic Charles County offers the following sports programs: Alpine Skiing, Aquatic, Athletics, Basketball, Bocce, Bowling, Cross Country Skiing, Equestrian, Kayak, Football (Soccer), Golf, Power Lifting, Snowshoeing, Softball, Table Tennis, Tennis, and Volleyball. Our coaches are volunteers who have a passion for a sport(s). Coaches are responsible for training, recruiting, and serving as a mentor to our athletes. Coaches certification courses are available in all sports offered by Special Olympics Maryland. A number of our sports use Unified Sports Partners. These volunteers are without intellectual disabilities who practice and play on a team with traditional Special Olympic athletes. Partners are required to adhere to the same rules as our athletes to be eligible for participation at State Competitions.
