Mission Statement

Founded in 1945 by the Presbytery of Detroit, Presbyterian Villages of Michigan (PVM) is a faith-based, multi-site, 501(c) 3 organization that serves seniors of all faiths. PVM became a freestanding, separate organization in 1989. Today, the organization has 26 senior living communities throughout the state, including continuing care retirement communities (apartments, assisted living and skilled nursing care all on one campus), subsidized senior housing, and market rate senior housing. PVM also sponsors community outreach and health ministry programs, including parish nursing and wellness programs.
PVM has been a recognized leader in the senior living and services industry in Michigan, nationally and internationally. Since 1993, PVM has transformed from a five-site, southeast Michigan $14 million company to a $60 million, 25-site, statewide organization of senior living communities including a new campus scheduled to open in 2013 in Detroit’s East Jefferson area.
The organization’s growth is not just in development of physical buildings throughout the state. PVM’s growth continues to impact the job market. Since 1993, PVM has grown to more than 650 employees in 2010. This does not include the hundreds of contractors that have been employed to build the numerous housing sites. According to LeadingAge (formerly the Association of Homes and Services to the Aging - AAHSA) Ziegler 100, PVM ranks 75th in the United States based on total senior living units and ninth based on affordable housing units.
PVM is committed to keeping Michigan seniors in the state of Michigan. Michigan’s population of residents aged 65 and over is steadily increasing and PVM is well-positioned to keep our seniors in Michigan. In the past several years, PVM has made significant strides in accommodating today’s seniors while identifying future needs of tomorrow. These accomplishments include:

  • The opening of Michigan’s first Green Houses (and the 2nd in the nation), an alternative to traditional institutional style nursing homes for our most frail elders.
  • An investment of more than $67 million for six low-income senior communities in the city of Detroit which significantly contributed to revitalization in each of the neighborhoods.
  • The development and implementation of Wellness programs open to residents and community members--a holistic approach to providing quality mind, body and spiritual programs/services so seniors can have the very best quality life.
  • Numerous partnerships and collaborations with other organizations to meet the growing and diverse needs of an increasingly growing number of seniors in the state of Michigan.

Rooted in the organization’s history is the culture of philanthropy that began with the donation of $10,000 by Clarence Sterling to help build the first PVM Village, now known as The Village of Redford. Today, thanks to the generosity of donors, the PVM Foundation continues to raise financial resources help fund important areas of innovative housing, programs and services; Wellness programs, and Benevolence funds to assist those residents in need when their lifetime funds have been depleted or for emergency funds.
Presbyterian Villages of Michigan, guided by our Christian heritage, serves seniors of all faiths and creates new possibilities for quality living. Each PVM Village throughout the state has a rich history and is paving the way for current and future Michigan seniors. -
