Mission Statement

The mission of Senior Connections is to train and support volunteers who visit and befriend isolated older adults in the Evanston community.

Senior Connections is an outreach program which pairs isolated older adults in the Evanston area with caring volunteers from the community. The new friends meet for about an hour once a week to go for a walk, do some shopping, go out to lunch, or just sit and talk. No special skills are required, just the desire and commitment to bring some sunshine into a senior's life. It's a unique opportunity to expand one's circle of friendship to include an older adult.

We have been connecting volunteer visitors with our local seniors for the past 15 years. A two hour training and a personal introduction with your senior are provided. You decide the day and the time you want to meet with your senior. Staff is available for ongoing support.

This organization truly cares about friendships needed for the Senior Community. Senior Connections is dedicated to matching volunteers with a Senior who would just like someone to visit with them every week. Having volunteered visiting a 98 year old woman who lived in her own home, I have learned a lot about life, getting older and the difference we made in each other's lives. Our visits were the highlight of both of our weeks. An amazingly special bond with Mary was built that I would never have imagined when I signed up to be a volunteer. There are so many more people who need that companionship. Come make a difference!

I am a teacher/writing therapist and have been working with seniors as well. My background is literature/psychology. I have been a helpmate in this area for twenty years. I worked in Ridgeview Nursing Home and the Evanston Retirement Hotel as well as The Comprehensive Mental Health Center at St. Francis Hospital.
