Mission Statement

MuttShack Foundation is a non-profit animal rescue organization dedicated to animal rescue, rehabilitation and care.

Description

MuttShack began in April 2005 as a shelter rescue organization. Later that year we responded to Hurricane Katrina and established the only free full service triage
facility in the City of New Orleans, where volunteers from all over the world came to rescue and provide critical care to over 3000 pets all without running water or electricity. Shortly after Katrina, as area shelters became overwhelmed with abandoned and surrendered pets, MuttShack transitioned to do mass shelter rescues transporting entire shelter populations to viable metro areas where animals found loving, life-long homes.

In 2008, in keeping with their Katrina promise and with the assistance and cooperation of local, state and national governmental agencies as well as other animal rescue and welfare organizations, MuttShack executed the largest mass evacuation of pets in U.S. history. Thirty hours before Hurricane Gustav touched down along the Louisiana coast, thousands of animals were transported to safety. All animals were housed in animal shelters in Shreveport, Monroe and Alexandria, LA. These shelters were set up along-side state-sponsored human shelters so they could be close to their owners. All animals were returned safely to their families.

MuttShack Animal Rescue works closely with area shelters to adopt out animals that have run out of time and help find them new homes. MuttShack Animal Rescue has joined forces with local area shelters and retail pet stores to promote life-saving adoptions after hours at convenient, high traffic locations.

MuttShack proudly supports the No Kill Movement and is a co-sponsor of the annual No-Kill Conference in Washington, DC. We actively support No-Kill programs, policies and legislation across the country and offer assistance to shelters trying to achieve No-Kill. Our volunteers and staff focus on frequent, offsite adoptions in high traffic locations on weekends and after hours when most shelters are closed.
Our adoption events provide a unique high-touch, interactive experience and result in lots of successful adoptions and happy families. All our pets are spayed/neutered, up to date on shots and microchipped!

What Makes MuttShacks Different?
MuttShack is a volunteer driven organization and doesn't spend money on buildings, staff and infrastructure. We encourage in-home sheltering where animals can get the love and attention they deserve and can learn the skills and behavior that will ensure them life-long homes. Many people have already experienced a dog rescue first-hand. It is no different, except this time those community members can look to the guidance of experts and to a network of support to promote the re-homing of their rescued pet(s).
