Mission Statement

The Empty Space Theatre makes theatre an event--bold, provocative, celebratory--bringing audiences and artists to a common ground through an uncommon experience.

Description

As Seattle's third-oldest non-profit professional theater, The Empty Space has long been a cornerstone of Seattle's vibrant theatre community, bringing professional quality to alternative voices and building a reputation for dynamic, cutting-edge productions. Over 80% of The Empty Space's more than 200 mainstage productions to date have been world, American, or regional premieres. Throughout its 36-year history, The Empty Space has produced and developed significant additions to the national theatre repertory and has been instrumental in fostering the careers of a generation of professional theatre artists from the Pacific Northwest, including Kurt Beattie, Jeff Steitzer, John Aylward, Lori Larsen, David Pichette, Jillian Armenante, Wayne Rawley, Lauren Weedman, and many others. Where/Seattle Magazine, noted: "A history of Seattle theatre could not be told without mention of The Empty Space. A wellspring of theatrical talent, The Space has played a primary role in shaping local and regional theatre, introducing audiences to new plays and playwrights who have gone on to achieve national and international status.

In January, 2006, The Empty Space became theatre-in-residence at Seattle University, performing in the brand new Jeanne Marie and Rhoady Lee, Jnr. Center for the Arts.

The Empty Space is led by Artistic Director, Allison Narver, and Managing Director, Melanie Matthews.
